Psychology is the study of behavior and mind, embracing all aspects of conscious and unconscious experience as well as thought.

It is an academic discipline and an applied science which seeks to understand individuals and groups by establishing general principles and researching specific cases.

Psychologists attempt to understand the role of mental functions in individual and social behavior, while also exploring the physiological and biological processes that underlie cognitive functions and behaviors.

The science of psychology plays the role of benefitting the society along with enhancing our lives. Psychologists examine the relationships between brain function and behavior, and the environment and behavior, applying what they learn to illuminate our understanding as well as enhance the world around us. Aaron Beck Psychiatry, Personality Psychology

Beck was born in Providence, Rhode Island his parents were Jewish immigrants to the US from Russia. He took his bachelor’s degree from Brown University, and received his MD from Yale Medical School. Beck’s work has centered on the diagnosis and treatment of depression, anxiety, and phobia disorders. He is undoubtedly best known as the person primarily responsible for the cognitive approach to therapy for depression, which in its modern form of cognitive-behavioral therapy (CBT) has become the gold standard for the clinical treatment of depression, with a much higher success rate than other types of psychotherapy. In working with his patients, Beck came to believe that it was their distorted view of reality-their inability to understand the objective causes and effects operating in the concrete situations facing them — that lay at the root of their psychological suffering. Beck is also widely known as the author of the Beck Depression Inventory (BDI), a self-reporting questionnaire designed to measure the severity of depression, which has been revised twice and is still widely used, but which also spawned a whole industry of similar inventories. Beck was also an important contributor to the theory of learned helplessness. Beck is one of the most highly esteemed and influential psychiatrists of the twentieth century.
