Janaki Ammal

She was an Indian Botanist who conducted scientific research in cytogenetics and phytogeography. She was born in 1987 in Kerala and completed her graduation in botany from Queens Mary College Madras and an hons degree in Botany from Presidency College in 1921. There she developed a passion for cytogenetics and her notable work comes from this field involving sugarcane and the eggplant (Brinjal). She has researched on various medical plants having great importance to human life. In 1977 for her contribution in the field of botany, she was awarded Padma Shri by the Government of India.
